The Doctor and Jo arrive onboard a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean, believing it to be 1926. They quickly learn, however, that this is not the case. They encounter a prehistoric leviathan, as well as a "recursion" of events that lead them to realize that the whole scenario is controlled. They are not on the earth, they are in fact in a Miniscope, a device used to entertain viewers by maintaining creatures of various species and forcing them to act out a series of events in supposedly natural surroundings. The Miniscopes are also illegal, and the Doctor wants to put a stop to its use. But first he and Jo must escape the device and confront its owners.
